Chronic Pain

Everyone experiences occasional aches and pains. Pain has been an important part of our evolutionary survival. It is our nervous system reacting to a certain stimuli and alerts us to possible injury. Those pain signals travel from the injured area through the spinal cord and to your brain where you recognize that something is not right. When injury or inflammation occurs, a number of biochemical mediators are released.

As the injury heals, the pain will normally start to reside. Chronic pain is different from typical pain or ache. Chronic pain is when your body continues to send those pain signals to the brain, even after you have healed. It can last weeks, months and even years. Chronic pain can hamper your normal activities by limiting your flexibility, strength and endurance. It often affects your mental state and not in a good way. If you are suffering from Chronic pain you are not alone. More than 20% of the US population or roughly 50 million people experience and suffer from chronic pain.

In some cases, however, people experience chronic pain without any prior injury. The exact causes of chronic pain without injury aren’t well understood. The pain may sometimes result from an underlying health condition, such as:

chronic fatigue syndrome:characterized by extreme, prolonged weariness that’s often accompanied by pain

endometriosis: a painful disorder that occurs when the uterine lining grows outside of the uterus

fibromyalgia: widespread pain in the bones and muscles

inflammatory bowel disease: a group of conditions that causes painful, chronic inflammation in the digestive tract

interstitial cystitis: a chronic disorder marked by bladder pressure and pain

temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ): a condition that causes painful clicking, popping, or locking of the jaw
